There's a cat like this tucked into a space between bushes near our house. I guess it's a good luck cat, judging by what it says on the website where I found this photo (by typing in "ceramic asian cat"). Norrie and Ana discovered it a few months ago and now whenever we walk by, or get anywhere near it, Norrie calls out "gato!" In fact, one way Ana can get her to leave me behind and head out to Totland is by telling her they're gonna go see the gato.
The other day we saw 2 cats like this in the window of a sushi place. I think it took Norrie by surprise -- how did that cat multiply and get into the window? -- but then she yelled out "gato" all the same. Berkeley may be a pretty white place, but at least I can be proud that my daughter calls an Asian cat by its Spanish name.

I wonder if Norrie makes the connection between the ceramic gato and real live cats, the late lamented Pretty in particular. Little kids are plenty smart, I'm convinced, but they don't know a lot yet, so it's hard for them to make connections. Or to do the kind of abstraction that lets us know that the ceramic object represents an animate cat. Too bad we forget so much so soon.
I absolutely loooved this entry..that's too funny!
